Dr Ben Warwick is a human rights lawyer and is a Reader in Human Rights Law at Birmingham Law School and Deputy Director of Education for the University of Birmingham’s College of Arts and Law.
Ben has undertaken research in the field of international human rights law, with particular interests in economic and social rights, the United Nations human rights system, and the protection of human rights in times of crisis. He has also researched and published on human rights and Brexit, including the implications of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union for Northern Ireland. His research has been used by governmental and non-governmental organisations in the UK, Ireland and internationally, and has attracted more than £2.6m in funding.
Alongside his academic work, Ben is a Lead Quality and Standards Assessor for the Office for Students and an expert subject assessor for the Quality Assurance Agency. He has undertaken work with a range of national and international human rights organisations, including training for the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. He has been invited to speak at events around the world. He has also previously been commissioned to undertake research work for both the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission and the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.
Ben holds a PhD in Human Rights Law and has published widely in the field.
Ben has been appointed as a Commissioner for a three-year term, commencing on 1 September 2026.
