After Northern Ireland left the European Union, the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) and the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland (ECNI) were tasked with monitoring the UK Government's commitment to protecting equality and human rights standards post Brexit. Together, the NIHRC and the ECNI form the Dedicated Mechanism.

As agreed in the Windsor Framework, the UK Government must ensure that the rights, safeguards and equality of opportunity protections set out in the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement will not be reduced by the UK leaving the EU.
