Human Rights Commission workshops in Ardnashee School and College

05 Jun 2025

The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) has provided human rights workshops to Ardnashee School and College in Derry/Londonderry.

The NIHRC provided interactive presentations to four different classes at the school. They focused on highlighting how human rights are for everyone, with young people exploring what human rights they have, how rights engage with sports, and the importance of the United Nations Convention on Persons with Disabilities.

Chief Commissioner Alyson Kilpatrick said:

“We really enjoyed the workshops at Ardnashee School and College. There was mutual learning and development - for us as much as the students.

The NIHRC is committed to supporting our young people to understand and better enjoy their human rights. Unless they do, the future of human rights protection for everyone in Northern Ireland is far from secure.

Thank you to Mencap NI and the school for their warm invitation and welcome. I would also like to say a big personal thank you to the students for their enthusiasm and willingness to engage with the NIHRC team. Their generosity and engagement make us stronger and better able to do what we are set up to do. We wish them all the very best for the future."

Rachel Fullen, Youth Worker at Mencap NI commented:

“We were delighted to welcome the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission to Ardnashee School and College. The workshops provided an engaging and accessible way for our students to learn about their rights and the importance of inclusion.

Our collaboration with NIHRC on the Mencap Heroes Plus Project has been extremely positive and worthwhile, and we truly value the opportunity to work together in promoting awareness and understanding of human rights among our young people."
