International Conference on Northern Ireland Peace Process
The Human Rights Commission is today attending a major international conference on the Northern Ireland peace process in Dublin. The conference on a shared future is also attended by the Tánaiste’ the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and the First and deputy First Minister.
Addressing observations to the conference Chief Commissioner Professor Michael O’Flaherty said:
‘This conference is a key opportunity to take stock of the important human rights dimensions of the Belfast Good Friday Agreement. Much has been achieved in Northern Ireland and international attention should be paid to such accomplishments as equality protections and human rights based policing. That said’ there are still areas that need addressed such as the adoption of a Bill of Rights. We must now rely on our political leaders to bring this process forward.’
The Tánaiste’ Secretary of State and First and deputy First Minister all responded to Professor O’Flaherty’s remarks. View full coverage of these responses and the OSCE conference’s opening session.
