International Symposium on Human Rights and Culture
‘Cultural rights in post-conflict societies: contemporary challenges and opportunities.’
Keynote address to be provided by the United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights’ Ms. Farida Shaheed
As part of the programme of events marking Derry / Londonderry City of Culture 2013 the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission is delighted to invite you to participate in an exciting international event organised in association with the University of Ulster.
The symposium will take place on 1 July 2013 from 9:30 – 17:00 in the Great Hall’ University of Ulster at Magee.
The event will also comprise workshops with local cultural practitioners and international experts in cultural rights who have assembled in Northern Ireland to inform a number of forthcoming United Nations reports on cultural rights.
Participants will be invited to consider:
• the meaning of cultural rights in a post-conflict society;
• the challenges of interpreting’ memorializing and writing the past;
• the opportunities presented by artistic expressions and creations as a bridge between divided communities.
This event offers a unique opportunity to explore pressing challenges in a local context while at the same time making an important contribution to the international debate.
