Local sporting organisation Berlin Swifts & Swiftettes signs the Declaration on Sport and Human Rights
Belfast-based Berlin Swifts & Swiftettes Football Club have signed up to the Declaration on Sport and Human Rights, following their recent presentation at the Northern Ireland Sport & Human Rights Forum.
The Declaration acknowledges sports' potential to advance the human rights of everyone and sets out several commitments to ensuring that sport is used to advance the protection of all who are impacted by sport.
The document, which was drafted by Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, has now been signed by 23 members of the Northern Ireland Sport and Human Rights Forum. This includes the Irish Football Association Foundation, Ulster GAA, Ulster Rugby and the Belfast Giants.
NIHRC Chief Commissioner, Alyson Kilpatrick, said:
“We are delighted that Berlin Swifts & Swiftettes FC have signed up to the Declaration on Sport and Human Rights. As a sporting organisation embedded in their local community, they have influence and their activities have reached many people of all ages. Their commitment to respecting human rights is incredibly encouraging and they are a great example of the positive impact a sporting club can have on its local area and people.
23 members of the NI Sport and Human Rights Forum have now signed up to the Declaration, and we hope more sporting organisations and members will follow their example. The importance of human rights in sport, and the recognition of this both locally and internationally, continues to grow, requiring all organisations involved in sport to consider the human rights implications of their work.”
