No More ‘Them and Us
A joint statement by the Community Relations Council’ the Equality Commission and the Human Rights Commission
Building a society that is inclusive and respectful of diversity is an objective which is shared by the Community Relations Council’ the Equality Commission and the Human Rights Commission. We are committed to working with each other to promote a shared and inclusive society that rejects ‘Them and Us’ attitudes and behaviour ’ towards a Northern Ireland which is a shared’ integrated and inclusive place’ a society where difference is respected and valued and where there is equality of opportunity and fairness for the whole community.
Equality of opportunity’ human rights and good relations are essential to creating a just and equal society. The objective of creating a shared and better future cannot be secured in the absence of human rights and equality for all. This approach establishes a vision that builds on the essential dignity of the human person. It values diversity not just as something to be tolerated but as a treasure for society. The promotion of a culture of tolerance and mutual respect is a legal requirement grounded in international human rights law.
Equal but separate is not an acceptable goal. We are united in working for strong community relations based on equality and human rights in order to bridge division and transform our society to one that is fair and equal.
We await a clear policy framework from the Executive in the form of a finalised strategy for cohesion’ sharing and integration’ as promised under the Executive’s Programme for Government’ that will help make this possible.
