Commissioner for Children & Young People bill' Committee stage
The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission welcomes the opportunity to
comment on the Commissioner for Children and Young People Bill. The
Commission is aware of the considerable work undertaken to date by both officials
and Members of the Legislative Assembly in producing this Bill and commends the
commitment of the Executive to establish this important office designed to ensure the
protection and promotion of the rights and best interests of all of the children of
Northern Ireland.
The Commission’s comments on the draft Bill are informed by its response of
November 2001 to the consultation document which preceded this Bill and by the
review of our own powers which we submitted to the Secretary of State for Northern
Ireland in February 2001 (and which is the subject of a current consultation by the
Northern Ireland Office).
