Education has long been recognised as a fundamental human right. Three
international human rights documents guarantee the right to education: the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the
Child, and the European Convention on Human Rights (now in local law within the
Human Rights Act 1998). These documents guarantee every child the right to an
education, free from any form of discrimination.
