The Nature and Extent of Human Trafficking in Northern Ireland

The greater movement of peoples that has been such a defining characteristic of recent years has, in the main, been a very positive feature of life. We share in new cultures; our traditions are more widely appreciated; our experiences are enriched. Those positive developments have, however, been accompanied by – and have sometimes masked – a much less savoury movement of people, utterly involuntary and wholly exploitative. Made more easy by the political and social dislocation of many states, given superficial cover by the unequal distribution of the world’s goods, this is the reality of human trafficking, our modern slavery.
