NIHRC deliver Human Rights workshops to Regent House Grammar
Students at Regent House Grammar School recently participated in human rights workshops run by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC). The NIHRC led 11 workshops, engaging with approximately 400 students.
Students learned about the role and core functions of the NIHRC in promoting and protecting the rights of everyone in Northern Ireland. The students also gained insight on international human rights protections, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and its role in influencing treaties directly relevant to them, such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
The students also learned about the Human Rights Act 1998 and discussed practical examples of human rights violations, as well as the intersections between sports and human rights.
Quote from Miss Byrne, Head of LLW at Regent House Grammar School:
“We are delighted to welcome back the Human Rights Commission for the third year in a row. They have participated in part of our LLW carousel week for each of our year groups. It’s really important to have these workshops to help deliver information on diversity, discrimination and racism and also to make the pupils aware of their human rights”.
NHRC Chief Executive David Russell also attended the engagement and commented:
“The team is delighted to be here today at Regent House School. This is part of the Human Rights Commission’s engagement programme with schools that we do right across Northern Ireland. It’s really important that we come out here to talk to children and young people directly about their rights and to hear from their perspective what is important to them, and what the Human Rights Commission should be doing to support them. We’re delighted to be here today to continue this really important area of work”.
