NIHRC holds human rights workshop at North West Regional College
Students at North West Regional College (NWRC) have recently participated in a human rights workshop run by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC).
Uniformed Protective Services BTC students at the Limavady college looked at the role and functions of the NIHRC in promoting and protecting the rights of everyone in Northern Ireland.
The students looked at human rights through the lens of both sport and business, discussing rights issues affecting many in both areas. They explored the human rights we are all entitled to, which included studying real life case studies looking at how human rights can be used to empower people.
Chief Commissioner Alyson Kilpatrick said:
“Our educational outreach is an excellent way in which we can raise awareness of our work and human rights more generally. It is of vital importance that young people know they have human rights, how they can be used to empower them, and that they have a Human Rights Commission to reach out to if they ever feel their rights have not been respected.
I would like to thank the staff at NWRC for inviting us out and commend the students on their enthusiasm and engagement throughout the workshop. I wish them all the best with the rest of their studies.”
Ian McGregor, Lecturer at NWRC, said;
"Michael and Jason from NIHRC delivered an engaging and highly interactive human rights workshop that proved extremely valuable for our Uniformed Protective Services students. The session challenged learners to think critically about their professional responsibilities in upholding human rights and provided practical, real-world insights they can apply in their studies and future careers across the Police, Fire and Rescue, Ambulance, Prison Service, the Armed Forces, HM Customs and other emergency-related organisations. Closely aligned to the course’s aim of preparing students for employment or progression to Higher Education, the workshop was highly relevant, well received, and clearly enjoyed by the group."
