NIHRC warmly welcomes launch of the EU PeacePlus Sport 4 Peace Project

30 Jan 2026

The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) warmly welcomes yesterday's launch of the EU PeacePlus Sport 4 Peace Project — an important cross‑border initiative that uses sport to promote the spirit of tolerance, intercultural dialogue and mutual respect among all persons living on the island of Ireland.

The Commission congratulates the organisers, partners and everyone involved in developing a practical programme that creates inclusive spaces, encourages participation and supports meaningful interaction between individuals and communities with different backgrounds and experiences.

The NIHRC has a strong working relationship with all four project partners through the Northern Ireland Sport and Human Rights Forum. Their commitment to using sport to advance human rights, promote understanding and support co‑operation across communities is exemplary. By supporting grassroots activity, cross‑community engagement and collaboration across jurisdictions, the partners are helping to expand safe, welcoming sporting environments for young people, volunteers and local organisations.

Commenting on the launch, Chief Commissioner Alyson Kilpatrick said:

“It is inspiring to see four members of our Sport and Human Rights Forum working together to demonstrate how sport can advance human rights and contribute to peace. We congratulate all involved in the launch of the Sport 4 Peace Project.”

The NIHRC looks forward to continuing its engagement with Sport 4 Peace partners — the Ulster GAA, Ulster Rugby, the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland — and with community stakeholders through our Sport and Human Rights Forum.

The Commission encourages organisations across the sporting and community sectors to engage with the Forum, share learning, promoting and protecting human rights and helping ensure that sporting opportunities are accessible to all.
